The easiest way to describe table in ielts writing task -1

IELTS Writing Task- 1- Table:

Topic:
This table shows the percentage of the population working in the agricultural, manufacturing and service sectors in 7 European countries in 2014.
Picture
The table:

·Look at  the bigger figure
·Group information together
·Find  the similar patterns in the information
·Organize those patterns into paragraphs

An easy way to group the information is just to write about agriculture, then manufacturing and then services. It is not enough just to list all the information. You should analyze those figures and find some patterns to avoid repetition.

Look at the variation from the biggest to the smallest:

Agriculture = 1% (almost nothing) to 30% = huge variation
Manufacturing = 15% to around 40% = significant
Services = 44% to 84% = almost same range

Now link the information together and compare between the different sectors. Following 4 steps you should write this like all other graphs and charts. First, paraphrase the topic, then write overall idea like a summary after that give detail description by 2 to 3 para.

A better version:

This table demonstrates the percentage of the population employed in the agricultural, manufacturing and service areas in 7 European countries in 2014.

Overall, It is straightaway obvious that in each case the highest proportion of people were employed in the service sector and with one exception, the lowest number of people were employed in the agriculture sectors.

The table shows the huge variation in the  agricultural sectors. In Romania and Ukraine around 30% and 13% of the respective workforces worked in agricultural sectors, while in all the other countries except this figure was 3.5% or lower.

There was less obvious variation in the manufacturing sector with the percentages fluctuating from a high of 37.4% in the Czech Republic down to about 15% in the UK and Greece.

There was roughly the identical distinction in the service sector. The Greece, UK,  France and Germany all had around three quarters of the labor force employed in the service industry.  By contrast, around 60% of Czech & Ukrainian workers and less than 45% of Romanian workers were engaged in the service sectors.

It is notable that people from UK, France, Germany and Greece all had a very low percentage of people worked in agriculture and a very high amount in services. In contrast, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Romania all had a significant percentage of workers either in manufacturing or agricultural sectors.

You should ask following questions before going to write the pie charts:
  1. Number of activities
  2. Is there any similar activities
  3. Do you find any change between these two years activities
  4. How many types of color

If you look at the chart, you will find:
  1. Total 8 leisure activities each year
  2. 7 out of 8 activities are same
  3. There are rise and fall in two years leisure activities

Step 1: You should consider following things:

1.      The biggest and smallest number
2.      What’s gone up & down
3.      What hasn’t changed and what is new

You will find following answers:

1.      In both periods walking is most popular
2.      Weightlifting is new and yoga disappears
3.      Swimming becomes double
4.      Aerobics, jogging and cycling all goes down
5.      Soccer and camping have slight changes

Step 2: How to organize the report:

·         Write the main points  first
·         Write similar group  together

Describing percentage in different ways:

Steps to follow:

Paraphrase the topic

Write overview (the main idea of the pie chart)

Paragraph 1

In both years, walking (29% & 30%) is the biggest slice of the pie
Weightlifting has replaced yoga

Paragraph 2:

  • Mention  soccer and swimming first then jogging and aerobics last
  • Mention the biggest changes – swimming the big riser and cycling, jogging & aerobics all big fallers.

A good version

The two pie charts illustrate the changes in popularity of different leisure activities in the United States of America between 1999 and 2009 over 10 years.

Overall, the most popular leisure activities were almost the same over 10 years. Among all the leisure activities walking was the most popular in both years and the yoga was replaced by weightlifting.

It is obvious that walking was the most popular activity in both 1999 and 2009 with around 30% of Americans preferred it. On the other hand, yoga has disappeared in 2009, while weightlifting was preferred by 10% of people.

Swimming in 2009, became almost doubled from 9% to 18% in popularity. The second most popular activity was soccer at just under 20%. Most of the other activities became less popular over the same period, with cycling, jogging and aerobics all falling by half to under 10%. Camping with around 9% remained almost unchanged over two decades.
In stark contrast, around half Americans went cycling in 2009 compared to ten years earlier and it became less popular than camping, at 7% and 9% respectively.

This bar chart illustrates the holiday accommodation selected by people in the UK in 2010.

Overall, it is possible to say that the English, Scottish, Northern and Welsh had very similar choices and hotels were the most popular  type of accommodation.

In all four countries, around 50% people selected to stay in hotels. This percentage was highest in England with around 55%, which was two times more than  the number of people (27%) who cooked for themselves and greater than the number of people(12%) who stayed in campsites.

The same pattern was found for the Scots and the Welsh. In each case, around 50% of holidaymakers took the hotels as their accommodation and with around 30% people went for self-catering apartments. The one exception was caravan holidays at 12%, which was more popular than camping holidays in Scotland. On the other hand, the opposite pattern was found in the Wales.

But the one country Northern Ireland shows a different pattern. In this country, over 30% of the people chose caravan which was more popular than self-catering accommodation and camping (both around 12%).
